Remains of missing scuba diver found after 26 years

The B.C. Coroners Service has identified the body of a scuba diver that was recovered from the Burrard Inlet back in October.

The remains of Peter Devoe, who was wearing a wetsuit and scuba gear, were found entangled in the nets of two commercial fishermen as they were pulling up their crab trap on Oct. 23 in the Burrard Inlet, just west of Cates Park.

Coroner Stephen Fonseca says then 29-year-old Devoe went missing during a dive on March 13, 1985.

Devoe experienced problems with his equipment and failed to resurface after diving with a relative at Cates Park in North Vancouver, he adds.

Fonseca says emergency personnel were notified, but Devoe’s body wasn’t found despite an extensive search.

A medical cause of death couldn’t be determined, but foul play has been ruled out.
