Researchers want to know how texting affects our writing

Is text messaging ruining the English language?

Researchers at Simon Fraser University are trying to figure how technology influences our writing habits.

Professor Christian Guilbault says the Text4Science project has collected more than 8,000 messages.

Guilbault says his team is at how Canadians are adapting their language as they text.

And he’s quick to point out there’s no need to fear the demise of proper English.

“It doesn’t mean they don’t know how to speak anymore. It just means that in a different context, they’re just going to use different forms and use language in a different way.

“And let’s face it, that’s what language is all about. Language is about being efficient and being able to carry some meaning.”

The study is in partnership with l’Université de Montreal and the University of Ottawa.

Texters are encouraged to pass on their messages to be included to 20-22-0-2.
