Richmond has signed on, under protest, to the new RCMP deal but they also might not be using the mounties for very long.
Mayor Malcolm Brodie says the city signed on because it was either that or pay out four-million dollars in extra costs.
When asked if the city plans to use the two year opt-out clause in the contract Brodie said,
“This is really just the first step we are going to be analyzing other options a regional model, a sub-regional model, our own independant police force, various other options that we may have in front of us we are going to take a look at them as a city and see what works for us and probably giving our notice at some point in the future.”
Brodie says at the end of the day the city may decide the RCMP are the best option but he frankly doubts it.
