Riley moratorium voted down

A proposed 6-month moratorium on the demolition of the Riley Park Community Centre has been defeated in a 5-2 vote by the Vancouver Park Board.

The motion, brought forward by NPA Commissioner Melissa Degenova, requested the extra time to consider options other than tearing down the centre later this year.

Allan Buium is with the Riley Park South Cambie Visions Group and has been advocating for at least parts of the centre to be kept.

A master plan for the area was approved by the Board back in 2005, “Things have changed. We didn’t know about Little Mountain, we didn’t know about the Cambie Corridor. Those are the two major ones that are gonna really have a major impact on the entire area.”

Buium says the new Hillcrest Community Centre will not be able to accommodate the thousands of new residents expected to come into the area because of those projects.
