VANCOUVER – Junior miner Rio Alto Mining Ltd. (TSXV:RIO) has temporarily suspended mining activity at its La Arena gold mine near Lima, Peru as workers begin a strike.
The company said it is in talks with the government and the local community in an effort to resolve what it has called an illegal work stoppage during the next few days.
The suspension of operations will hurt the company’s 2011 gold production, and Rio Alto said it will provide an updated guidance once production resumes.
The La Arena gold and copper project is Rio Alto’s primary operation but the company holds several other exploration properties in Latin America.
