Riot aftermath leaves citizens frustrated and seeking closure

One year after the Stanley Cup riot, only two people involved have made their way through the justice system.

Ryan Dickinson and Emmanuel Alviar – both 20-years old – are currently serving jail terms, after pleading guilty.

But the majority of riot suspects have not even been charged.

In fact, out of the 225 files Vancouver Police have referred to Crown prosecutors, only 104 people have been charged.

And of them, three had their charges stayed.

The VPD expect to hand another one hundred files to Crown in the next few months.

There are twenty rioters who have pleaded guilty and are waiting to be sentenced.

There are also accused rioters are waiting to go to trial next year.

The first riot trial will be held in February.

For her part, Premier Christy Clark is not impressed with the slow pace of riot-related justice.

Clark says she understands why people are frustrated.

“It has really brought to light some of the issues that we have in our justice system, the need for reform…so we are able to address issues when they arise, when there’s a public appetite, quickly and efficiently,” says Clark.

She is hoping the justice review currently underway will help solve some of those issues.

But BC NDP Attorney General Critic Leonard Krog says Clark’s government is to blame for court delays.

“It’s alarming that it appears some of these cases are going to fall into that trap created by the BC Liberals, where the cases will be dismissed because they’ve been delayed so long,” says Krog.

Krog adds, perhaps the Premier should have focused on funding the court system in the days after the riot, instead of playing politics by pushing for cameras in the courts.
