Rioter gets 17 months

Ryan Dickinson was sentenced Thursday to 17 months in jail for his part in the Stanley Cup riot.

The 20-year-old Coquitlam resident, who was the first person to plead guilty following the June 15 melee, got 16 months for participating in a riot, minus three and a half months for time served.

B.C. provincial court Judge Malcolm MacLean added one more month for a breach of bail conditions from a previous charge.

In outlining his reasons for the sentence, MacLean said Dickinson’s behaviour did not show he was just caught up in a momentary lapse of judgment and his actions were “persistent and deliberate.”

“There are times when he could have walked away but did not,” MacLean said, adding Dickinson’s behaviour had no doubt encouraged others to participate in the destruction that night.

Crown prosecutors had asked for 15 to 18 months of jail time, while Dickinson’s lawyer recommended a one-year sentence.

On Tuesday, the court was shown photos and videos of Dickinson taking part as a mob trashed two unmarked police cars on Nelson Street before throwing a mannequin and a newspaper box into the Black & Lee store window.

Dickinson will also serve two years of probation, during which he must attend counselling, abstain from possessing or consuming drugs or alcohol and seek and maintain employment.

Spokesperson Neil MacKenzie said the Crown was satisfied with the outcome since it was within the range of what prosecutors had been seeking.
