Rita Johnston comments on current political climate in B.C.

She was the province’s first female Premier, and is now a member of the BC Conservatives.

Rita Johnston has some advice for her party’s leader, John Cummins, and for Christy Clark.

The 2012 political climate in B.C. may be rather familiar to Johnston. She took over as Social Credit premier after leader Bill Vander Zalm resigned in 1991 – only to spark a bitter leadership race with Grace McCarthy.

Her advice for Cummins as he deals with dissident rumbling?

“It leads to loss of support, that’s what it really does, and that’s the big danger we’re facing.”

Johnston later won the leadership, only to lose the provincial election soon after.

And with Premier Christy Clark struggling in the polls after she took over from Gordon Campbell?

“It’s tough. I don’t wish her bad luck. But she won’t be getting my vote.”
