River levels spark evacuation alert in Maple Ridge

60 homes in Maple Ridge are now on evacuation alert.
Fred Armstrong with the district says the alert affects people on Wharf Street on the unprotected side of the dyke.

“The District’s flood management plan calls for the issuing of the alert in that area when the Fraser Mission Gauge reaches 6.5 metres.  We were looking at the information in the forecast from the BC River Forecast Centre and it looks like that 6.5 threshhold is gonna be hit probably sometime during the night.”

Armstrong says they felt it would be better to get the information out to residents Friday night rather than in the morning.
Armstrong says many on Wharf Street are well prepared and have made plans to deal with the situation.
The alert means they should be ready to leave on short notice.
