VANCOUVER – High winds and falling snow on British Columbia’s South Coast have cut power to tens of thousands, delayed ferry service between the mainland and Vancouver Island and snarled traffic on a major highway to the Interior.
Environment Canada may have cancelled its wind warning for Metro Vancouver Friday evening, but the damage had already been done.
BC Hydro reports that more than 17,000 customers on the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast and nearly 15,000 customers on Vancouver Island remain without power.
BC Ferries reports delays and cancellations because of rough weather.
And Drive BC reports the closure of the northbound and southbound routes of the Coquihalla Highway for several hours because of falling snow, with the northbound lane reopening just after 8 p.m.
Even protesters at the Occupy Vancouver camp were preparing for a rough night, collecting plastic sheeting and getting people into dome tents just to keep warm.
