The head of the City of New Westminster’s Emergency Management Committee says steps are already being taken to mitigate flood fears there.
Dave Jones says they are keeping an eye on the rising Fraser and already have crews laying down sandbags to hold back the water, if need be, “The City of New West, as part of its mitigation strategy, has put sand bags out in certain areas, especially in the Braid Industrial Area. But that is a normal course that we would do at certain levels that the city deems necessary. We have the dyke obviously, in Queensborough, on Lulu Island, in that area.”
Jones says a new city park just opened on the riverfront this past weekend but isn’t in any danger of being flooded just yet. He also advises people living in flood zones to keep an eye on the city’s website.
