Sawmill worker safety and best practices will be targeted after deadly blast.

Labour Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says a new working group on worker safety in sawmills will be formed with the forest industry and labour groups in the coming days.

This the result of a meeting held today to discuss mill safety in the wake of the devastating explosions in Burns Lake and Prince George.

She said “and there will be a separate working group that industry and the unions have agreed they will start working on right away to look at what are the best practices?   are there safety issues we should be thinking about especially given the change in the actual quality of the pine beetle wood.”

Meanwhile MacDiarmid says Worksafe BC will officially issue its order for sawmill safety inspections tomorrow, but notes some of that work is already being done.
