A longstanding infantry regiment is moving to a temporary new home.
If you saw a few dozen soldiers marching down West Fourth Avenue this morning, flanked by cops on horseback and a couple of armoured vehicles, don’t worry.
It wasn’t the imposition of martial law.
Bombardier Megan Ludwig explains it’s just the Seaforth Highlanders moving from the Armoury on Burrard Street to Jericho Garrison.
“Seaforth [Armoury] is being re-done, it’s being seismically upgraded, as well as we’re having a ‘super-armoury’ created.”
The regiment has served in every major Canadian overseas operation, and half of them are veterans of the war in Afghanistan.
Glee Devereaux with the 15th Field Royal Canadian Artillery Band says it was tough saying goodbye to the old building.
“I did get quite moved when I heard the pipes play Auld Lang Syne to the old building, because I guess it’s going to have quite a transformation and they were saying their fond goodbyes to it, so that was quite moving.”
The armoury was built by the regiment in 1936.
