Search warrant raises questions

Questions have been raised about ethical boundaries being crossed by the RCMP,  following a scandal involving one of their own.

Parts of a search warrant involving allegations of defamation against Corporal Jim Brown have now been unsealed.

The document allowed the seizure of three computers and a cell phone from a New Westminster man’s home.

David Eby with the BC Civil Liberties Association says it appears special measures were taken in the case.

“If any member of the public is defamed, they have to go to court themselves, they don’t get to call 911 and have the police investigate it –someone saying bad things about them on the internet.”

Brown was the subject of an internal review because sexually explicit photos of him appeared online.

The images were uncovered by the media in July.

Because large parts of the search warrant remain blacked out, the BCCLA is taking further legal action to have those sections made public.

That court battle is slated for October 16th at provincial court in Surrey.
