Sex-trade advocates gear up for 2013 court battle

Advocates for the rights of sex workers in Vancouver are busy preparing for a court case next June that will directly influence their own case to abolish prostitution laws here in BC.

A group of Vancouver sex workers were cleared in September by the Supreme Court of Canada to proceed with their challenge of prostitution laws.

Now, the group can finally go before a court here in BC and explain how current laws put them in danger.

But first, lawyer Katrina Pacey with the Pivot Legal Society says her clients want to see how a similar case from Ontario plays out in the same court.

“Our clients feel very strongly they want to both support the Ontario litigation as interveners as well as see what the outcome is of that case.”

Pacey says a ruling in the Ontario case’s favour could strike down some of the current laws, but not all of them.

She says that’s where the BC case will come in.
