Ship building contracts present a challenge for North Shore communities

The Mayor of North Vancouver is worried about pending Seaspan contracts, but not how you might think.

Darrell Mussatto says he doesn’t think the federally awarded contracts are in any kind of trouble.

“We have been told not to worry. Our biggest challenge is going to be housing. Where are we going to house a lot of the workers, where we can house there work force, and how are we going to be able to support them in a positive way so those workers can live here.”

Mussatto says it is going take a massive effort from roads,to housing, to accomodate the influx of workers.

“We are working with the different companies involved to try to make sure that those workers can stay here and work here and live here for the rest of their careers.”

In January Seaspan was awarded $ 8 billion in federal government contracts to build Coast Guard vessels.
