Skateboard park grinds its way forward at UBC

A possible skateboard park at the University of British Columbia is grinding along. If the project is approved, it could be the first skate park on campus at a major Canadian university.

A public-consultation meeting was held last Tuesday to understand the specific needs of residents and youth on campus. The session also allowed the design team to identify elements that could be accommodated at the proposed park.

“We are still in the planning process,” said Kyle Dion, president of New Line Skateparks. “(We’re) trying to build a multi-use park that would be put on campus, and finding out what people would like to see in a park.”

The location and budget of the proposed project have yet to be determined.

New Line Skateparks and Van de Zalm and Associates have been hired by UBC and the University Neighbourhood Association for design consultation. Both designers have collaborated before in skate-park projects.

While the skate park aims to attract skateboarders, it is also meant for other activities such as mountain biking, BMX and roller-skating.

Dion says that the skate park will most likely be a hybrid, consisting of the usual — concrete, ramps and railings — along with other modern manmade features.

The next consultation meeting, to unveil preliminary design concepts and the park’s possible location, is scheduled for March 5. A final decision on the construction of the park is expected in April.
