Some Mayors are going to ignore a deadline to ratify the RCMP contract

Don’t expect Burnaby to ratify the new RCMP contract by the end of month deadline, and it looks like they aren’t going to be alone in doing so.

Mayor Derek Corrigan says the city is still examining its options as they have concerns over costs and control over policing under the deal.

Corrigan didn’t seem to be phased much by the deadline next week to ratify.

“I don’t think that the province or the federal government are going to pull the police out of Burnaby, Richmond, or North Vancouver as a result of us not signing. I think if we are looking legitimately at what the process should be and whether or not we should look at alternatives I think that the governments will probably co-operate.”

Corrigan says his city, Richmond, and the District of North Vancouver, and others have concerns over costs and control.

“We are still talking amongst the mayors about what we might do in order to formulate a report that would look at all of these issues we are in a position where we are going to have to act together in order to make sure that we look at all of the possible avenues and there are many.”

Corrigan says those options include “Having our own police department, the idea of merger with other police departments is out there, continuation of the RCMP contract is of course one of the alternatives. But I think there is more mayors that they might have expected looking at the full range of possibilities including some sort of regional police force.”

Corrigan says negotiators failed in giving municipalities a level of certainty with the deal.
