Stakeholders begin to look at life after the Kits Coast Guard base closes

It’s a move opponents vow will cost lives but it appears the reality of the Kitsilano Coast Guard station closure is finally sinking in

Stakeholders held a meeting Monday afternoon to discuss life after the base.

But what exactly was said we don’t know.

The meeting was closed to the public, with government bureaucrats, joined by police and other groups inside.

David Heap speaks for the Coast Guard.

He said “What we’re talking about is how we’re going to move forward as they base closes. Everyone has their role to play.”

CKNW “What was the mood in the room.”

Heap “The mood in the room was very professional, we all get it we’re all in this game.”

Mike Cotter with the Jericho Sailing Centre has long been one of the main voices opposed to the plans.

“This decision’s been made. The bureaucrats have to stick to that. If there were any changes, it has to happen at the political level.”

The station is set to close next year.
