Stats indicate some improvement for homeless

The Downtown Ambassadors have implemented their cold weather strategy but what they’re finding is there are fewer people needing help in Vancouver.

The program’s run by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association and Executive Director Charles Gauthier says there are likely fewer people on the streets thanks to the recently-opened HEAT shelters and other housing, “You know, certainly the numbers have come down dramatically; primarily because of the efforts of the City and Province to make the shelters available during the cold weather. As well, we’ve seen new inventory come on stream regarding housing options.”

The Ambassadors have been handing out coats, gloves, socks and food for the last 12 years and directing those looking for shelter or other services.

Gauthier says other business improvement associations are reporting similar trends.
