Street race revs up cops

An attempted street race on the Deas Island freeway sent thirteen young drivers and their fancy cars to a fast but not so furious finish.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the RCMP received multiple reports of high-end vehicles driving at speeds up to 200 km/h southbound on Highway 99 from the Massey Tunnel.

The vehicles, which included a Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Mercedes, Audi, and Nissan R Series, are valued at a head-turning $ 2 million combined.

Six of the thirteen vehicles were stopped as they exited the freeway in Surrey, while the other seven were located and stopped by White Rock RCMP a short distance away.

Witnesses reported that two vehicles would drive side-by-side and slow down to allow the others ahead of them to race.

All of the drivers, mostly under the age of 20, will be charged with dangerous driving and had their vehicles impounded.
