Surrey city council votes to ask the province for a choice when it comes to smart meters.

Surrey City council has passed a motion asking the province to give people a choice when it comes to the installation of BC Hydro Smart Meters.

Councillor Barinder Rasode says the issue simply wouldn’t go away and they kept hearing complaints in person, by phone, or via email.

Rasode says while she personally is not opposed to smart meters.

She says “But I do believe that have serious concerns especially those that are sort of prefaced in their own health should have the option of whether they have a smart meter or not recognizing of course this is within the provincial government jurisdiction but being accountable and responsive to our residents we believed it was important to add their voice and send it forward to the province.”

But Rasode admits the motion does not give anyone in Surrey any immediate rights to refuse to have the Smart Meter installed.

She says “No unfortunately like I mentioned this is provincial jurisdiction all we are saying is that we are forwarding the voice that our residents have raised to us to the provincial government asking that they consider that people be able to have a choice when it comes to their meters.”

Rasode says the motion passed unanimously on Monday.
