Surrey M-P Apologizes after Medal Given to Man Facing Criminal Charges

Newton-North Delta NDP M-P Jinny Sims has issued a statement saying she awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal to Maninder Gill – manager of Radio India on Sunday – in recognition of his significant contributions to his community and wasn’t aware of the pending legal matter.

Sims says she recognizes the seriousness of the crime he’s accused of and apologizes to those who are offended that he was given the medal.

Gill faces trial on firearms charges in connection with a shooting three years ago outside a Surrey Sikh Temple.

The Diamond Jubilee Medals are to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

Canadian M-P’s are given a number of the medals which they are allowed to disburse as they see fit.
