Surrey man escapes after train smashes his van

A 77-year-old Surrey man narrowly escaped injury early Thursday morning after his van was struck by a train in Mission.

RCMP said the man got his Dodge Caravan stuck on the tracks at the crossing near Hawkins Pickle Road and Bell Road just after 3 a.m.

Police said the man told them he had been driving, lost for four hours when he became disoriented, turned onto the tracks he thought was a side road, and got stuck after trying to turn his vehicle around.

“The elderly male had the good sense to immediately get out of his vehicle when he saw the train approaching, preventing him from serious or fatal injuries,” Cpl. Sharon Siluch said in a release.

The man escaped without injuries, but the vehicle was destroyed and pushed 400 meters down the tracks.

Canadian Pacific Rail Police are continuing the investigation.
