Surrey’s Mayor says next transit project isn’t up to Metro Van mayors

The Mayor of Surrey says despite what the Transportation Minister says it is not the role of mayors to chose the next transit project to go ahead.

Dianne Watts says both skytrain expansion in Surrey and rapid transit along Broadway can both go ahead.

“I am sure the minister well knows that the independent board has that task and it is within legislation for that board to decide it is not in legislation that, that is one of our roles and responsibilities but I am sure she knows that because she is the Minister of Transportation.”

While Watts says the two transit expansion projects are not in competition watts says Surrey is farther along in planning the skytrain expansion.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak had asked mayors for more details about funding initiatives and which transit expansion project would come next.
