A majority of British Columbians want public liquor stores open on Sundays.
That from an Angus Reid survey done for the BC Government and Service Employees’ union.
74 per cent support Sunday openings.
72 per cent want increased shopping hours.
Union boss Darryl Walker says although the timing comes as the provincial government looks to sell off parts of the liquor distribution branch, this study is more about finding more revenue streams for BC.
“This would be basically at straight time rates, the same rate as people are paying on Friday, Wednesday, Monday and so forth. No overtime is involved in this.”
The government runs 197 liquor stores across the province — 22 are open Sundays.
Walker argues opening each store would generate up to 100 million dollars a year.
