Taxpayers Federation wants Transit Police included in Translink audit

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation wants BC’s Transit Police to be included in an upcoming audit.

Director Jordan Bateman says the officers have made several what he calls ‘head-scratching’ spending decisions, such as high overtime.

And he says the only way to have them included in Translink’s looming audit is to lobby the government to have its director of police services make it so.

“Apparently the most recent changes to the Police Act made it much more difficult to audit police forces. And I heard from a whistleblower who works with transit police who told me that transit police consider themselves exempt from the Translink audit because this Police Act hasn’t been enacted or hasn’t been triggered.”

Bateman says the Transit Police employs about 160 people under 27-million dollars a year.

He adds an earlier audit by Vancouver Police did not focus on whether the body is good value for money.

Justice Minister Shirley Bond’s office, meanwhile, did not reply to a request for comment.
