Teck signs tentative deal at Highland Valley

VANCOUVER – Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TCK.B) says it has reached a new tentative agreement with the union representing workers at its Highland Valley Copper operation in B.C..

The company says the deal with the United Steelworkers covers roughly 1,050 employees at the mine.

The union had served strike notice on the company that would have allowed a strike to begin Oct. 2 if a new deal had not been reached.

A ratification vote on the deal is expected to be held in the coming days.

The tentative five-year deal runs to Sept. 30, 2016. No other terms of the agreement were immediately available.

Highland Valley is in south-central B.C. and produces copper and molybdenum, used in steel alloys.

Teck is Canada’s largest publicly traded miner and is a major producer of zinc, copper, other metals and coal.
