The leader of the BC Conservatives wants to know why the PST bill took so long

The leader of the BC Conservative party is welcoming the new improved PST but is wondering, what took so long?

John Cummins says the changes to the PST announced by the government are good but really just minor improvements, and the process as a whole isn’t rocket science.

He said “They will be able to file electronically that is an improvement but again you have to wonder why it took eleven months to get to this point you know the only rationale reason I guess is that the government was addicted to the extra revenue that was coming in under the HST program and they just simply weren’t prepared to lose that revenue in the short term.”

Cummins says by introducing PST exemptions by regulation it allows for changes to the tax with a sweep of the pen and no debate.

He said “It is always better to have a debate on these things but certainly they aren’t going to be able to hide it from the public and if they are going to be moving in a direction the public is not in tune with or the public finds offensive I think there will be plenty of debate but it will be on the airwaves not in the legislature.”

Cummins says the province also may have an agenda by jamming the PST bill and other bills at the end of this sitting.

He said “Well it certainly seems like the government is rushing a number of bills through you have to wonder whether the objective here is to forego a fall sitting it seems to me that may be part of the agenda.”
