The US puts the brakes on restarting an Enbridge oil pipeline

The US Department of Transportation has told Enbridge it cannot restart a pipeline running through Wisconsin after a spill last week.

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood calls the spill “absolutely unacceptable.”

LaHood says Enbridge officials must meet with him and explain why the pipeline should be restarted without a major overhaul or complete replacement.

He has also issued a corrective order requiring Enbridge to submit a restart plan for his approval.

They must also bring in an outside evaluator and run a battery of tests on the entire 400 mile long line and submit the results to the US government.

Last week a line carrying oil from Canada suffered a spill leaking about 1200 barrels of crude in Wisconsin.
