They’re not raises: premier’s office

The premier’s office is offering more clarification, about political staff and executive salary increases that have unions hopping mad.

According to a ‘fact sheet’ given to CKNW, political staff have been under “net zero” for the last six years.

And while some staff have received pay increases, it comes because they move up a pay grade.

Unlike in the public sector, the premier’s office insists, moving up a grade comes after a performance review — and is not automatic.

In contrast, many public sector workers get automatic pay increases because they move up a pay grade thanks to seniority, even in a net-zero environment.

For example, teachers get automatic increases of $ 2,800 a year on average for the first 10-years — costing the province around 32 million dollars a year.

Further, the budget for the premier’s office has been reduced to 9 million dollars this year and next.

In 2009-10, it was 10.2 million dollars.
