This throne’s for you

It takes a special breed of fan to get up early for a 12-hour Game of Thrones marathon, but it takes a true “Thronie” to do it the morning after a midnight screening of The Hunger Games.

Vancouverite James Fraser will change out of her Hunger Games outfit after the late-night show, catch a few hours of sleep, then get right into a medieval gown for the 7:30 a.m. start of the Thrones marathon at VanCity Theatre.

Even after half a day of fantasy action and drama, fans will stay for the unveiling of the eponymous Iron Throne itself.

The iconic prop throne used in filming for the show has been delighting fans in its tour across North America. Now it’s Vancouver’s turn.

“I’ve been so excited to see the throne,” Fraser said Thursday. “I’ve been gushing about it to anybody who will listen.”

Movie Central, which is responsible for the Vancouver exhibition of the prop, has seen enormous reaction to both the marathon and the throne’s arrival.

“There’s been a ton of interest,” Movie Central marketing director Winny Hui Giannini said Thursday. “It’s generated a lot of buzz with the fans.”

When asked why she thinks some people become so loyal to the show, and the books on which it’s based, Fraser said it all comes back to good, old-fashioned writing.

“The characters are just so real,” she said. “They’re intriguing, but twisted…. In this world of Hollywood artificiality, everything gets wrapped up with a pretty bow on it. That’s not Game of Thrones. It’s really refreshing.”

The throne will be on public display at the VanCity Theatre all day Friday.
