Toews hikes room and board for inmates, eliminates perks

Saying he wants to restore balance in the criminal justice system, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews is taking aim at perks for prisoners.

In a tweet Wednesday morning, Toews says he recently learned some inmates in Canadian prisons had access to porn on their televisions, so he has put at end it.

Toews is also increasing the amount inmates are charged for their room and board, he is eliminating “incentive pay” for inmates working at Corrections Canada facilities, and transferring the cost of managing the inmate telephone system to the offenders themselves.

Toews has also expressed support for a private members bill aimed at reducing, what he calls “vexatious offender complaints.”

Toews says the measures should save taxpayers $ 10 million dollars a year.
