Tofino marks one year anniversary of Japanese Tsunami

One year after Japan’s massive earthquake and tsunami — the mayor of Tofino says more debris continues to wash-up on the shores of his community.

Perry Schmunk says while the majority of the large debris isn’t expected for about another year — items like bottles and small personal effects continue to pop-up on the beach.

He says both he and the mayor of Uclulet have also met with the Japanese Consul-General, who shared a request.

“If something comes ashore that could have some unique identifying marks to it… photos, names, anything like that… that they’re very interested in getting it back to their people and the families that were affected by the tragedy.”

Schmunk adds the town has also started the communication process with the province and regional district, as more debris arrives from overseas.
