Tories take credit for reduction in crime

The number of crimes reported to police is continuing to go down.

Statistics Canada says crime reporting is at its lowest level since 1972.

Nearly two million incidents were reported last year, about 110-thousand fewer than in 2010.

The severity of crime index is also down six percent.

The news has Public Safety Minister Vic Toews taking credit for the results on Twitter- crediting the Conservative’s tough on crime legislation.

But crime levels have been going down for eight years in a row — and have been trending down since 1991.

And last year there was actually a spike up in offences targeted by conservative legislation — including sexual offences against children &  drug crime.
