Toronto man wanted for more than a decade, arrested in BC

A Toronto man wanted for more than a decade on violent charges had been hiding out right here in BC.

Police say the man had been living here under another name for the past nine years.

Edward Melvin Ellis was wanted on charges dating back to 1999 for assault causing bodily harm, sex assault and forcible confinement.

His capture began with a tip back in April from Toronto police that he could be in the BC Interior.

Mounties dug back through the files and found the 51-year-old indeed was living in Penticton.

Corporal Dan Moskaluk says Ellis was arrested Thursday night without incident.

“It’s not uncommon that individuals will at times go undetected and elude detection for years at a time.”

Moskaluk says Ellis is not tied to any other current RCMP investigation.

The man remains in custody until he can be sent back to Toronto.
