Transit ridership climbs in Vancouver area

VANCOUVER – Metro Vancouver’s public transit system is well on its way towards transporting more people this year than even during 2010, when B.C. hosted the Olympic Games.

TransLink says it’s on track to charting a new record for annual ridership, having already moved commuters for more than 114 million trips during the first six months of 2011.

Total ridership on buses, SkyTrain and other services was more than 211 million last year, with passenger count higher every month this year except in February, when the Games were on at the same time in 2010.

But Ian Jarvis, the company’s chief executive officer, says he’s concerned TransLink doesn’t have enough resources to meet the substantial rise in demand if it continues at the same pace.

TransLink will hold several public meetings in September to learn if there’s public support to use $ 70 million in revenue to fund expansion, including adding new routes, upgrading stations and funding the yet-to-be-built Evergreen Line.

TransLink is also reminding commuters to expect heavier crowds after labour day.
