TransLink’s ridership numbers continue to grow but the huge spike adds pressure to keep up with demand, says a spokesperson for the transit authority.
Metro Vancouver’s transit system is on its way to charting a new record for annual ridership, with 114.4-million commuter trips already in the first six months of 2011, which at this rate will outpace 2010’s tally of 211.3-million riders.
“A lot of people used transit during the Olympic Games last year and found out it worked pretty well and kept using it,” TransLink spokesperson Ken Hardie said.
But Hardie added it’s crucial to expand the system.
“TransLink is not in a position now to add new capacity,” he said. “We have money to keep what we have in place but if we are not able to expand, we think that we’re not going to keep up with people who want to take transit.”
