Truckers don’t need AirCare

The BC Government doesn’t need to clamp down on heavy-duty trucks as it re-focus the AirCare program.

Louise Yako, President of the BC Trucking Association, says it’s unnecessary because engine and fuel standards have much improved in the past two decades.

So, what about those trucks often spotted coughing out black smoke along the highway, “I would challenge you actually, to point out a truck that is now emitting black smoke because I haven’t seen one in ages.”

Yako estimates about 80 workers have been trained to pick out trucks that emit black smoke for a random inspection.

She adds truckers don’t need the “burden” of mandatory testing.

The Government has announced passenger cars and trucks will no longer have to pass AirCare, starting in 2015.
