The ridings of Chilliwack-Hope and Port Moody-Coquitlam finally have representation in the legislature again, as Gwen O’Mahoney and Joe Trasolini have been sworn in as MLAs.
Legislative clerk Craig James says the two rookies are joining a select group.
“Since 1871, only 881 out of all the people who have lived in the province, some six million, have held the high honour of being elected to this chamber. Today, two more members are added, bringing the total to 883.”
The two New Democrats were elected in by-elections last month. They bring the opposition strength to 36 seats in the legislature, compared to 46 Liberals, two independents and one BC Conservative.
It’s a new political career for a veteran of public life in former Port Moody mayor Joe Trasolini.
“Much more emotional than I thought, it is an overwhelming feeling to be here.”
Chilliwack-Hope MLA Gwen O’Mahoney has been watching the action from the public gallery for the last couple of weeks.
“To actually be on the floor, it really brings the reality close to home.”
NDP Leader Adrian Dix sees his caucus grow by two as a result of what he calls the party’s positive approach to politics.
“Gwen and Joe both reflect this. They’re positive, they represent their communities.”
