Two new Siberian tigers at Greater Vancouver Zoo

They welcomed a new giraffe last week. Now, the Greater Vancouver Zoo is announcing the arrival of two new Siberian tigers.

Hana and Hani, both about a year old, are from the zoo in Seoul, South Korea.

Zoo spokeswoman Jody Henderson says the two were quarantined for 30 days but are now out in their enclosure.

She says it’s important to teach young people about Siberians, which are endangered, to help save them in the wild.

“There’s probably only about 500 left in the world, and I think that was two years ago when that estimate came in for the Siberians themselves. The other species of tigers – there’s probably in the range of 3,000 to 5,000 left in the world.”

She says tigers are hunted as trophies or to be used in traditional Chinese medicine.
