UPDATED: Grandmother tried to save toddler who drowned

RCMP say a 20-month-old boy who drowned last night in an outdoor apartment complex swimming pool in Surrey likely fell in.

His 51-year-old grandmother, who can’t swim, tried to save him.

She’s on life support in hospital.

RCMP say the grandmother was babysitting the boy and the two were playing around the pool before the tragedy happened.

“With the summer season now upon us, this unimaginable tragedy is a reminder to the public to always be mindful of young persons’ vulnerability around bodies of water,” says Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger.

“It is also a reminder for us as parents or guardians to have an awareness of our own abilities as life-savers.”
