Lifeguarding at some Vancouver beaches could be facing the axe – as the park board tries to cut costs.
That has some close to the issue raising red flags.
“It looks like they’re going to cut-back lifeguarding services in Jericho beach, and also on Spanish Banks west, and Spanish extension as well,” says Mike Cotter with the Jericho Sailing Centre.
It’s a move meant to save the board a quarter-of-a-million dollars.
“One thing about Jericho Beach is it’s just downwind from a boat launch area, and it’s an important job to keep the boats and the swimmers separated for safety’s sake.”
An online petition against the move has also been launched.
The issue will be brought up at Monday’s park board meeting.
