Vancouver Chiefs request PM keep Kits Station open

The Chiefs of the Vancouver Police and Fire Departments have written the Prime Minister urging Stephen Harper to overturn the decision to close the Kitsilano Coast Guard Base.

Police Chief Jim Chu and Fire Chief Jim McKearney say plans to offset the closure aren’t good enough.

They say the transfer of all Vancouver area incidents to the Sea Island Coast Guard Base and a volunteer search and rescue team won’t provide the same level of service currently provided by the Kits Station.

They go on to say the Sea Island Base right now responds to 250 calls a year within a forty mile radius. They say it’s “inconceivable” that base can respond to an additional 300 calls that are currently handled by the Kitsilano Station.
