Vancouver councillor welcomes combat sports legislation

One Vancouver city councillor is welcoming the creation of a provincial body to oversee combat sports.

The new commission, announced in legistion unveiled yesterday, will regulate mixed martial arts.

The city wasn’t include in UFC’s 2012 schedule because a trial period allowing professional fighting events expired.

But Kerry Jang says this move from the province could means there’s a possibility the event could come back for 2013.

He said “its really up to the province now and the new athletic commissioner to determine if an event will be in the city of Vancouver.”

Jang adds the legislation may help Vancouver attract MMA events.

He said “this would actually level the playing field it would allow the province now to determine what comes to the city of Vancouver and what doesn’t.”

Jang says with the old system, it was up to each city to set up safety rules and regulations.
