Vancouver Fire Department meets with Coast Guard ahead of Kits base closing

The Vancouver Fire Department wants to know what will be expected of them when it comes to fires in the harbour after Kits Coast Guard base closes.

Captain Gabe Roder says they met with the Coast Guard Wednesday.

Roder says they wanted to get a handle on how many fires Kits base responds to and where they are.

“In the past we have always used what I would call a fabulous overlapping system if the Coast Guard arrived first on duty we would arrive shortly there after the response time for us won’t change what may change is that initial response from the Coast Guard and I can’t tell you at this point how that is going to affect anybody only time will tell that.”

When asked if the fire department opposes the closing of Kits base, Roder said he doesn’t want to get involved in the politics, but .. “What I will tell is that as a fire department we’re a service that wants to keep our community safe and we are in favour of keeping as many resources in place within our community that all help to keep our community safe and if we can have multiple agencies working together to establish a safer community that is what the fire department would like to see.”

Roder says the meeting also involved city officials.

But the mayors office says they didn’t know anything about the Coast Guard meeting.
