Vancouver police discourage warning others on Twitter about roadchecks

They don’t like it, but there’s not much they can do to stop it.

That’s how Vancouver police are responding to the ongoing use of social media, such as Twitter, to warn would-be drunk drivers about counterattack road checks.

“It comes down to an ethical dilemma more than it does to a legal dilemma.”

Spokesman Sgt. Randy Fincham says the people issuing those warnings may not understand the consequences of their actions.

“To have people tweeting information that is providing people with information how to defeat these roadblocks, it creates a dangerous situation.

“I’m sure a person that put that tweet out, if they knew that information they provided ended up with an injury or a death, they would feel horrible about doing that.”

Over the New Year’s Eve long weekend, Vancouver police say they pulled 68 impaired drivers off the roads.
