Bad news for a lot of teachers in the Vancouver School District today as they were told they are being laid off.
School district spokesperson Kurt Heinrich says “Were going to be forced to lay off 227 teachers.”
Heinrich says if past years are any indication the district should be able to re-hire about 80% back in September.
But he admits the number comes from averages over previous years “We are going on numbers we have had over the last couple years. Last year we had 76% of those laid off were hired back in some capacity. The year before that in 2009 2010 we re-hired 89%.”
As for why the district is laying off the 227 teachers Heinrich says “While it is not directly connected to budget cuts these layoffs are part of an annual process where it has been necessary outcome connected to declining enrollment, and also returns from full and partial leaves of absence, as well as retirements.”
The layoffs will take affect June 30th.
He says the province has also kicked in funding for 19 teaching positions which will filled in the future.
