For the first time, Vancouver police are hosting a women’s safety fair.
Sgt. Colleen Yee from the Sex Crimes Unit says the B Street Smart fair will feature information booths and a personal safety demonstration by VPD tactical training specialists.
“We’re hoping the community is going to take advantage of this. Come out and learn some valuable information … that’s going to help them be safer in their communities.”
The fair takes place Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Trout Lake Community Centre.
Meanwhile, Surrey is banding together against domestic abuse.
Mayor Dianne Watts and others have kicked off the Rakhi project, a crime reduction initiative designed to raise awareness of domestic violence.
“What it is, is taking a traditional Indian ceremony where sisters traditionally tie purple bracelets on their brothers, which signifies love and respect. And it honours that relationship between brothers and sisters and how brothers are going to protect the sisters.”
Braided bracelets go for $ 5 each with proceeds going to the Surrey Coalition against Domestic Abuse.
