Vander Zalm wants insurance to cover costs of defamation suit

Bill Vander Zalm isn’t letting it go.

The former Premier and Fight HST crusader is trying to get his insurance to cover the tab after losing a $ 60,000 defamation suit.

In February, a BC Supreme Court judge ruled Vander Zalm did defame former Conflict of Interest Commissioner Ted Hughes and awarded $ 60,000 in damages.

Hughes’ lawsuit stemmed from comments the former leader made in a 2008 book.

Now, Vander Zalm wants his $ 5 million personal injury policy to pay for the damages and both his and Hughes’ legal costs.

In a petition to the court, the ex-Premier claims his policy was meant to defend any lawsuit against him on account of personal injury.

None of these allegations have been proven in court.
